Love them or hate them we all (well mostly all) take part in a good old link up. But it has occurred to me of late that they’re not too dissimilar to speed dating. Well, I say that but I should also probably say that I have never actually been on a speed date but I have watched enough to TV to get the gist – I think. So linkeruppers, or speed daters, here’s the comparisons I see:
Speed date: you walk into the room you eye up your next 30 minutes of conversation . Linky: the page loads and you eye up your next 30 minutes of ‘digital conversation’. The word conversation is used a little fast and loose here admittedly, the comments you leave can strike up conversation, just not always the fast flowing type
Speed date : you write your name on your sticky label and stick it on yourself for all to see. Linky: you copy and paste the linky badge to the bottom of your post, for all to see.
Speed date: you pull up a chair and the chat begins . Linky: you add your link to the list then click on the hosts post and start reading.
Speed date: you move to your next 3 minute date and so on and so forth. Linky: you click the next hosts post, the post before yours, and the mandatory ‘other’ that takes your fancy.
Speed date: dating over and you decide if there’s anyone you may like to see again. Linky: reading and commenting complete, you may or may not RT a particular post you have read, if you’re that way inclined. You may even hit that golden ‘follow’ button.
Speed date: alternatively you may have caught someone’s eye and they ask for your number. Linky: you have a new Twitter follower (woo) and maybe a new blog follower (double woo).
To my mind people go on a speed date for a bit of non committal fun but with potential, whatever that potential may be I’d say is up to the speed dater (nudge nudge wink wink). As with us linky participants, it to is a non committal way to get your blog out there and have a peruse of others, you don’t have to subscribe, or even read (bar the hosts, previous post and ‘other’…of course). The potential of a linky is not to be sniffed at, repeat visitors become ‘known’ the continuous Twitter reminders and obligatory ‘I’ve just linked my post to…’ Tweet gets your name out there. Not to mention your post itself, frequent flyers may gravitate toward your post once you’ve been spotted a few times, and they’ve enjoyed your content. I know I have in the past headed toward the same bloggers posts that I have previously enjoyed. A bit like a speed date there is nothing to be lost in partaking in a good old linky, they call it a ‘linky party’ for a reason ya know, so don’t be shy visit your local linky party (which is all of them when your on the big wide web) and join in. It is, in my opinion, a fab part of blogging that showcases lots of fellow bloggers and their brilliant posts.
Here’s a list of some of my regular haunts – it is by no means a definitive list, and there are lots more out there to take part in, I for one am still uncovering a lot but it’s a good place to start.
